What is Hip Hop Dance
Hip-hop dancing is usually performed to mainstream hip-hop music and evolved through the hip-hop culture. The style became popular in the USA in the 1970’s with notable dance styles being popping, locking and breaking. Breaking was created in the Bronx in New Yorkand at the time of creation it was the only hip-hop dance style. Breaking includes four dance styles: toprock (footwork whilst standing up) footwork, (footwork performed with both hands and feet on the floor) freezes, (styled poses) and power moves (consisting of complex and striking acrobatic moves). Locking was created in California and is similar to breaking with the notable difference being that the position is held longer with playful and emotive character style being expressed. Popping was created in California and involves quickly moving the muscles of your body by creating a jerked movement. Each pop hits the beat and rhythm of the music they are dancing too in order to depict the music through their movement. Hip-hop is an improvisational technique that allows the participant to express themselves freely through music. Rhythm Junkiez allows children of all ages to engage in hip-hop classes and enrich themselves with a fun and respected dance style.
History of Hip Hop Dance
Hip-hop received mainstream exposure in the 1980’s through film and television. As breaking was being developed inNew York, numerous other styles were being created inCalifornia. Roboting, bopping, hitting, locking, popping and electric boogaloo were among many of the new styles being developed. Hip-hop has become a sociable and enjoyable sport with music and distinct dance styles being incorporated into the music genre. The Cha-cha slide and the Worm are two styles that combined the notion of hip-hop with humour and music.
The dance industry reacted to hip-hop by commercialising the style which is now often seen in music videos and concerts. The media plays a large role in commercialising and promoting hip-hop and has created the dance craze for all ages. Commercial dance ties together the style of hip-hop with normal dance styles allowing the style to reach a large quota of dancers.
